Before you apply for lateral entry into Class 7, 8 or 9 of an Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya (OAV), you must check that the school has a vacancy in that class. The Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha, has published school-wise vacancy lists (Annexure-C) for the 2027-28 session. This guide summarises those official lists and explains how to use them.
Important: Online registration for OAVET 2027-28 closes on 16 November 2026 (midnight). As per the official notification, if you register for a class or OAV that has no vacancy, the registration will be cancelled and the admit card will not be issued. Always check the official list for your school first.
OAV Vacancy 2027-28 at a Glance
These totals are calculated from the three official Annexure-C lists (Class VII, VIII and IX).
| Class | OAVs with vacancy | Total lateral entry seats |
|---|---|---|
| Class 7 | 232 | 1,923 |
| Class 8 | 234 | 1,184 |
| Class 9 | 257 | 1,263 |
All 30 districts of Odisha have OAV vacancies in each class. Seats vary a lot from school to school. Many schools have only 1 or 2 seats, while some tribal-area schools have 40 or more.
How to Read the Vacancy List
Each school's row has six category columns and a total:
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| UR | Unreserved (General) |
| UR(W) | Unreserved, reserved for women (girls) |
| SC | Scheduled Caste |
| SC(W) | Scheduled Caste, girls |
| ST | Scheduled Tribe |
| ST(W) | Scheduled Tribe, girls |
| TOTAL | Total vacancies in that class at that OAV |
Example: a row showing UR 1, UR(W) 0, SC 0, SC(W) 1, ST 0, ST(W) 0, Total 2 means one General seat and one SC girls seat are available.
Seats by Category (Statewide)
| Category | Class 7 | Class 8 | Class 9 |
|---|---|---|---|
| UR (General) | 201 | 187 | 238 |
| UR(W) (General girls) | 157 | 108 | 121 |
| SC | 95 | 66 | 97 |
| SC(W) (SC girls) | 90 | 48 | 65 |
| ST | 782 | 413 | 415 |
| ST(W) (ST girls) | 598 | 362 | 327 |
| Total | 1,923 | 1,184 | 1,263 |
What this tells you:
- General (UR) seats are few. Across the whole state there are about 358 General seats in Class 7 (UR and UR women together), 295 in Class 8 and 359 in Class 9, spread over more than 230 schools. Many schools have 0 or 1 General seat.
- ST seats are the majority, especially in tribal districts like Koraput, Malkangiri, Kandhamala, Rayagada and Gajapati.
- Competition for a seat depends on your category in your school's vacancy, not on a single statewide cut-off.

Rules You Must Follow When Choosing an OAV
These rules are from the official Instruction for Admission (BSE Odisha, 2027-28):
- You can apply to only one OAV and only one class.
- You can apply to the OAV of your native residential block (residence certificate needed).
- If your native block's OAV does not have the class you want, you can apply to any OAV in the same district where that class is available, subject to vacancy.
- If your native block's OAV has the class but no vacancy, you are not eligible to apply to any OAV for that class.
- A student living in one block but studying in a school of another block can apply in the block where they study, with a residence certificate.
- Wards of serving State Government or State PSU employees can apply to the OAV of their native block or the block where a parent is employed.
- Students already studying in an OAV cannot apply.
- You cannot apply to both OAV and OMAV.
- Registration is accepted only if the class and a vacancy exist at that OAV.
How to Use This List (Step by Step)
- Find your native block's OAV and check the vacancy list for your class (Class 7, 8 or 9).
- Look at your category column (UR, SC, ST, and girls' columns). A seat in your category gives you a real chance.
- If your block's OAV has no such class, check other OAVs in your district.
- Apply before 16 November 2026 (midnight) at bseodisha.ac.in or oav.edu.in.
- Choose the class carefully. The class selected during registration cannot be changed later.
