Salary and Job Profile

  • Pay level: Level 9, Rs. 28,900 to Rs. 74,500 per month, under the West Bengal Services (Revision of Pay and Allowances) Rules, 2019.
  • Allowances such as DA and HRA are admissible as per government rules.
  • Work: Personal Assistant and stenography work for officers in West Bengal government offices.
  • Job type: permanent state government job.
  • Why it is popular: Level 9 is a higher pay level than the Clerkship post (Level 6) and it is open to a Madhyamik pass candidate, so competition is strong among skilled candidates.

Selection Process and Exam Pattern

There are three papers worth 600 marks. Paper-I is held first, and only a limited number of candidates are called for Papers II and III.

Paper Subject Marks Time
Paper-I General English 100 1 hour 30 minutes
Paper-II Dictation and Transcription 400 6 minutes dictation plus 1 hour transcription
Paper-III Computer Typing 100 10 minutes
Total 600

Paper-I: General English (100 marks). Spelling of words, correct use of words, correction of sentences, common phrases, synonyms and antonyms, and punctuation.

Paper-II: Dictation and Transcription (400 marks). Dictation of about 6 minutes at a uniform speed of 80 words per minute, followed by transcription of your shorthand notes on a computer in 1 hour.

Paper-III: Computer Typing (100 marks). Typing on a computer at not less than 30 words per minute.

Key points:

  • Paper-II carries 400 of the 600 marks, so shorthand speed and transcription accuracy decide your rank.
  • WBPSC fixes qualifying marks for each paper and for the total.
  • The final merit list is made from the combined marks of all three papers, followed by document verification. Paper-I marks are reported to count in the final merit too.
  • Check the notice for the tie-break rule and the exact qualifying marks.

The scheme and syllabus are given in the official WBPSC advertisement. Use that PDF as your final reference.

  • PwBD certificate if applicable
  • Proof of permanent government service (Schedule B candidates)

Preparation Tips

  • Give most of your time to Paper-II because it is worth 400 marks. Practise dictation at 80 wpm daily, then transcribe on a computer within 1 hour.
  • Accuracy matters as much as speed. Proofread each transcript, since spelling and punctuation mistakes cost marks.
  • Practise typing every day to cross 30 wpm with high accuracy.
  • Prepare Paper-I for a good score: spelling, sentence correction, synonyms, antonyms, common phrases and punctuation. Questions are objective and a good score helps you reach Papers II and III.
  • Take timed mock tests for Paper-I (90 minutes) and practise on a computer, not only on paper.
  • Solve previous year papers of WBPSC and similar stenographer exams.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Applying on the last day. The portal slows down close to 3:30 PM on 7 November.
  2. Wrong date of birth, which should match the Madhyamik certificate.
  3. Using the wrong age cut-off. It is 1 January 2025.
  4. Choosing the wrong Schedule (A or B) or the wrong category.
  5. Ignoring Paper-II preparation, which carries 400 marks.
  6. Practising transcription on paper only. The test is on a computer.
  7. Trusting rumours on dates. Follow psc.wb.gov.in.
